Pieces of Talent (2012)

Set in the small coastal town of Bright Leaf, North Carolina. Pieces Of Talent centres around Charlotte, a disillusioned aspiring actress working a night job as a cocktail waitress in order to make ends meet. Charlotte catches a break when seemingly by chance circumstances put her in contact with a local filmmaker, David Long. David and Charlotte form a quick friendship that leads to Charlotte landing the starring role in david’s newest project. David quickly becomes obsessed with Charlotte and begins building his bloody masterpiece by killing members of the community. He films each encounter with the ultimate goal of filming Charlotte as his final instalment. David is a happily obsessed individual willing to do whatever it takes to make true art. He utilises his charm and skills to make something dark and deranged seem utterly beautiful and loving.

 

From the start you know Pieces Of Talent is going to be something special! We get an i your face sequence to what is to follow! This film grabbed me on multiple levels. Beautifully shot surroundings and what I would call rustic scenes in our main character David’s shed. Everything felt really well thought out and a counterpoint to what the movie is about, which I will come to soon. Scenes of surrounding farmland and old buildings really give a feeling of normalcy and perhaps to a point a sense of isolation.

 

Of course all of this is awesome in respect to what we have here; a serial killer movie. To a point maybe even part revenge film, but this is an assumption based on what we get with in respect to our main character David. Being a horror movie about a man killing people, there is naturally blood and gore. Thankfully it is very well done practical effects and not CGI. The kills for the most part are original and you can feel what is happening. Also it is brutal and does not hide anything.

 

Character wise there are no weak links, everyone plays their parts well. As in this reality some of the characters who eventually become victims to this film making brutality, have their obvious character flaws so in ways get what they deserve. David Long, who plays his name sake in this film, does an amazing job! He has this sense of enthusiasm, thus a sort of madness, about what he is doing which is truly believable.

 

In the end I found Pieces Of Talent a truly entertaining feature with no weak points. This is one of those films that truly deserves people’s attention. Everything was so well done and you can see the effort and love put behind it. In ways I felt this was a revenge flick with certain things that appear to be happening but then it becomes more apparent at the end.
