Like a Doll is a French language short film from Joseph Catté, who directed and produced himself! Playing both female and male character is Pauline Helly.
Beautifully shot, well executed acting and effects Like a Doll had my complete focus from the beginning to finale credit roll 00:05:19 minutes later! I know what you are thinking though, such a short time period anything would be easy to focus on! But no, this amount of time CAN be an eternity if a short film is painful enough! Luckily for this viewer this is perfect!
Like a Doll had me questioning the why’s of the whole situation and what was happening! Was she under the control of this abusive male figure she finally had enough of and took violent action; was she destroying the male duality and allowing her femininity to regain control, killing off the memories of an abusive father symbolically through thoughts of murder or was she a serial killer?
My last comment comes from something she states and the title of this, Like a Dole!
As mentioned in the introduction Pauline Helly portrays beautifully both male and female roles! A woman who is discussing an action she is explaining had to happen due to circumstances that she needed to deal with to gain her own identity and the male figure whose slaughtered in very bloody fashion.
Naturally there is murder and blood. It is beautifully done, in fact perfect! Along with this was the make-up used for Pauline’s portrayal of the male character. Blemishes and what have you was just needed to create this effect that made me look twice just to make sure of what I was seeing, it is brilliant! This is important and a strong part of what makes you think throughout the viewing experience.
Like a Dole is a very worthy experience for those of you who love the short film experience I fact it made me feel the need to see a feature length version and what Joseph Catté could bring to the table, he most certainly has the abilities! Along with this again Pauline Helly creates a solid performance of both male and female dualities!
