A couple of days ago one of two of Die Die Delta Pi’s directors, Sean Donohue approached us on our EHC Reviews and Interviews Face Book page enquiring if one of us would like to review his film. Having seen it mentioned on Face Book along with it showing on indiehorror.tv for this years Halloween I was keen to see what it was like!
Die Die Delta Pi is Sean Donohue’s second feature length directorial after 2012’s Joe Vampire. Along for the ride in the director’s seat is Chris Leto; who has two features to his name before this film, 2010’s If I Can’t Have You… and 2012’s The House Wife Slasher. Along with this he has a film made after Die Die Delta Pi titled Rough Cut and another just announced, The Ritual.
It’s 1986 and the House of Delta Pi is having their annual tradition of burning the effigy of the housemother they torment. Inviting the nerd of the house sorority sisiters they go and have a night of bonfire, burning, booze and sex not expecting a terrible accident to erupt and coincidentally people back at the house butchered by a black cloak assailent!
26 years later and Delta Pi is ready to come back into existence with a whole let of fresh new faces! Little do they know that the killer has returned and plans on a slaughter!
Boobs, slaughter and mayhem Die Die Delta Pi is a return to the slasher style film of the 80s!
Die Die Delta Pi is a slasher film in the vein of those great films of the 80s in both feel, nudity and obviously kills. Kills involving garrotting with barbed wire, decapitations, burning and in one instance one student getting their stomach pulled out! For all this bloody gory mayhem Chris and Sean got talented gore-meister Marcus Koch for special effects make-up duties. Apart from one instance of CGI at the beginning this is pretty much all-practical gore effects, and is bloody awesome! One part brought to mind German Splatter of the Ittenbach/Rose variety with this decapitation scene with its geyser of blood that I loved!
My only qualms are the small use of CGI at the beginning of the film, and the mental hospital scene once this emergency arises. Though I felt the doctors were fine for the role once everything goes bad I didn’t find them so convincing at all, no feel of urgency. But in stating this these are only two minor parts of a whole. I never really comment on acting in these films anyway as I understand they do the best they can and I respect that, just for whatever reason it stood out for me. In stating that next time I go experience Die Die Delta Pi it may not be such a big issue anyway. With this stated in the end these got lost after we move on a bit!
Die Die Delta Pi achieves what it sets out to do, a slasher film in the style of what we got in the golden age. Though not without its minor flaws it is a really nice watch, especially for me it gave of this deja-vu of going to the video rental and picking up some horror film to watch! Chris and Sean are obviously fans of this genre and it shows. A lot of passion flows of the screen and I can feel the slasher love! Go check out if you are in the need of a modern slasher, I plan on picking it up myself!
