Dire Wit Films, the production team behind the grindhouse spoofs ISLE OF THE DAMNED and PLEASURES OF THE DAMNED, go in a more serious direction with their latest release 7TH DAY. 7TH DAY is a serial killer film by Jason M. Koch, an FX artist whose credits so far have included RETURN TO NUKE ‘EM HIGH VOL. 1 and V/H/S/2.

7TH DAY stars Mark Sanders as Allen, a restaurant dish room worker with a twisted personality he hides behind a mask of normalcy. Allen is a psychopath who stalks and kills women (and men on occasion) and has hallucinations of being followed by a weird mummified reporter who holds a microphone up to him while he tells his story on why he does what he does and what it is he hopes to achieve in life. In his regular, everyday work life, Allen is viewed as a loser. He gets pushed around by a macho co-worker and tries to get one of his female co-workers to like him, but she shuns him away because he creeps her out. Allen also deals with an annoying, pervert neighbor and a junkie in the time when he is not out stalking and looking for prey as a killer. He has dreams of the person he wishes he could be, successful with the girl from his job as his wife and with a family. He continues to kill, dismember corpses, and at times dabble around in cannibalism and necrophilia, all the while reciting his memoirs to his imaginary reporter friend.

7TH DAY is a dark, gruesome look at the mind of a psycho with some truly unique factors that set it apart from other serial killer flicks. It’s interesting in that there are times when the main character begins to question what it is he is doing and what it is he hopes to accomplish and seems to wonder at times whether his victims really deserve what they’re getting. This factor gives the film some originality in dealing with the psychosis of the main character and explores the side of a killer that isn’t usually explored in other serial killer flicks. The film has some really brutal and gory moments and images that are guaranteed to disturb and disgust. Mark Sanders gives a believable performance as Allen and Jason Koch has shown himself to be a competent director and talented FX artist. I look forward to seeing what he brings us in the future.

The Dire Wit Films DVD release of 7TH DAY contains an audio commentary, a short film by Jason Koch, and trailers for 7TH DAY and other Dire Wit releases.
